If you are one of the many people who received a PlayStation 3 in the holidays then I hope you are happy with your console. I hate to be negative but I have to tell you about a serious issue that thousands of ps3 owners have had to deal with over the past year. The yellow light of death. Basically it will render your console useless for anything from half an hour to permanently. Do not worry just yet it is not contagious and it can be prevented if you follow some simple steps.
The yellow light error simply is the machines way of telling you that there is a general hardware error, however the main cause of the ylod is overheating. The console will just get too hot and stop to function correctly. It is likely to happen if you leave your machine running for prolonged periods of time and will come with no warning.
When setting up your console ensure that it is in a properly ventilated area. Don’t leave it near an open window but make sure that air can get to it. A lot of people will keep their console in an entertainment unit with all their other gizmos, while this looks really great it can cause your ps3 to overheat. All the equipment will throw out heat when it is running and this will only allow your ps3 to circulate warm air through itself which obviously will not keep your machine cool. If you are going to keep your ps3 in a unit then ensure that the doors are open whilst playing.
Also be aware that if you have your console in the corners of the room this may cause an increased build up of heat as that area of a room can trap excess heat. Also having your PlayStation standing up vertically will allow the heat to be expelled easier as heat rises. I know that there is a rumour that having your ps3 set up this way causes difficulty in reading discs but this is simply not true. Sony designed the console to be fully functional in both positions.
Hopefully just bearing these simple points in mind will ensure you never see the dreaded yellow light of death on your cherished games console. Sometimes this will still not be enough, and you may still get the error as it can be caused by other reasons as well. However there is loads of information on these topics on various blogs and forums all that can help prevent the yellow light of death striking you down in your game playing prime.
