How to properly shut off playstation 2 so discs don’t get ruined?

I am borrowing a playstation 2 console from my sister and am not sure I’m turning it on and off correctly. Since having it, the main game I have been playing got 3 major scratches on it somehow from being in the player. I’ve heard of this happening due to not shutting it down properly and need to figure out what I’m doing wrong!

I play it about every day, but not enough to warrant keeping it on all the time. I typically shut it on using the back switch, then push the reset button to restart my game. When I’m done playing, I hit the reset again and then click off the switch in the back. Am I doing the right thing?

  1. On: Flip switch to I. Press and hold Reset.

Off: Press and hold Reset. Flip switch to 0.

Those old PS2s (that actually have switches) have been out for a while. It could be possible that the mechanism has worn out and the disc is wobbling at some point. Or someone else scratched it somehow and cleverly put it back in the PS2 hoping it wouldn’t be noticed.

  2. First, you want to open it while it’s running to make sure it isn’t overheating. Feel the entire bottom half of the disk to make sure it isn’t getting too hot. Put it back in and unplug the playstation. Don’t save your data, it could cause a system crash and ruin the playstation.
