Sadly Xbox problems are not few and far between. In fact over 10% of all Xbox 360’s have the familiar three flashing red lights at some point during their lifespan. So it’s no surprise that you’ve found this article. Read on to find out how I fixed the three flashing red lights on my Xbox 360.
1- The first thing I did was do a little bit of research on what causes the three flashing red lights on my Xbox 360. Most of the articles I read said that heat was the cause.
2- The next thing I did was clean up the unit. I realized my console was extremely dusty. There was dust in the vent holes and my guess is that it made it start overheating in the first place.
3- After I cleaned the unit up good, I started doing some online research on how to fix the Xbox 360 system without having to send it off to Microsoft. Since my 360 is one of the first generations of the console it was not under warranty. After extensive learning, I found an online resource that had step-by-step tutorials and videos for how to take the system apart, fix the problem that the overheating caused and then put it back together. That cost me all of $30.
4- Next I followed the guide and took the Xbox 360 console apart. I took the DVD player out and removed the motherboard. I pulled off the X-clamp, GPU, and heat sink. Lastly, I used cheap washers to prevent the X-clamp from bending the GPU and breaking the solder joints. All of this would have been trouble, had I not had the repair guide I mentioned in step 3. Luckily it walked me through this step-by-step.
5- Finally, I put the console back together (followed the guide for that too), and then let it warm up and re-bond the solder.
Boom, I was back to playing Xbox 360 without the three flashing red lights in about 30 minutes. What’s so great is, following this plan (even if you don’t buy a guide, although I’d recommend it unless you’re familiar with Xbox 360 guts), you can easily fix your Xbox console without having to pay Microsoft’s repair fees.
Some people get lucky and buy an Xbox 360 that never has problems. Other people (like you and I) buy a console that’s destined to get the Three Flashing Red [http://3-redlightfix.info] Lights.
