How can I install PS3 games to the hard-drive?

Since FF13 decided to start freezing a bit on me I’ve decided I want to save my three new ps3 games to the hard-drive. I want to do it this way because I heard that games installed to the hard-drive don’t have to use the blueray laser to play, and thus it won’t have to get worn out.

Also how would I know these games are installed to the harddrive, and do I have to use the disc anymore once they are?

Can I get a SD card(maybe a 2GB one) to have as a backup?

The three games I want to install to the hard-drive are Heavenly sword, Folklore, and Tomb Raider Underworld if that makes a difference.

Lastly, I want to vacuum the dust out of the ps3. Is there a special way I have to do it. I heard if you do it wrong static electricity from the vacuum can ruin the ps3.

Slim 120 GB. Have had for 2 months.

  1. only games downloaded from the playstation store can be fully installed and run from the hdd , disc based games sometimes do a partial install to save load times but can’t be fully installed

a game like ff13 is 35 gigabytes , that’s not feasible to install – plus you’d still need the disc to show ownership or there’d be piracy.

most games freeze because either they have a bug and need a patch downloaded or you have something wrong with the data on the ps3 – a simple file system restore will fix that.

to vacuum just use a low powered vacuum at the vents while the ps3 is off , and if you want to get the most dust possible from it remove the hdd and vacuum inside the space left too.

  3. If that were possible you would never have to buy a game for say $60 again, all you would have to do is rent them and copy it to HDD. Sony would never let that happen, you CANNOT copy a Blu-ray game to the PS3’s HDD. When you hear about installing a game, its either ones that are bought off the PSN or games that require data to be stored onto the PS3 for faster loading and for those games it will happen once you put the disc in the system and it will let you know the game is installing, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need the disc to play it anymore!

  4. You can install games, and I only know because of BioShock Ultimate Rapture Edition(URE). It’s only certain games, though, and I’m not sure what all of them are, but BioShock 2 can be fully installed from the disc. I played it with my Fallout 3 disc in the PS3 instead of my BioShock URE disc.

And I’m sure there’s probably a list of installable games somewhere. This is the internet. 🙂
