Hi I bought “Planet Earth” on HD-DVD. I also own a Hitachi HDTV with 1080i resolution. I also own Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on player. Since my “Planet Earth” is HD-DVD & my HDTV & my Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on too. So then why it is not playable? When I insert the “Planet Earth” into my Xbox 360 HD-DVD player, it only shows BBC image & then everything is pinch black picture.

What is the problem? Thank you!

  1. Hey there Adam,

I also have it on Blu Ray as opposed to HD DVD but I think I may know what the problem is with your player(s).

Planet earth requires the most up to date versions of Blu Ray players, this may also be the case with HD DVD. Whichever company makes the drive you are using probably has a website. Go to it and see if there are any firmware updates.

This may be what you need to do for the player to read the discs. There was a letter that actually said that very thing in the Blu Ray version of the movie so this could very Well be the case for HD DVD also.

    Good Luck.

  2. there is something probably wrong with the hd dvd drive. try a different movie to see if it works. by the way, i have the ps3 and the blu ray planet earth, and its sweet. great choice in movies. hopefully you can get everything straightened out. good luck

  3. No solution, but just wanted to let you know that I have the exact same problem (In my case I rented the HD-DVD, but it hangs right after the BBC logo, like you described).

So I think it might be a software issue with the Xbox HD-DVD player.

UPDATE: Well, it turns out that’s what it was – you need to sign in to Xbox Live – when you do with the HD-DVD inserted, it will download an update, which will let the DVD play.
